Some lessons are learned the hard way, and some are learned from experience and observing others. I don’t claim to have all the answers, but here are a few simple truths that I’ve learned throughout the 35 years I’ve been on this crazy planet. For what it’s worth . . .

  1. People rarely change, so it’s easier to accept them for who they are than to try to change them.
  2. It’s more important to be genuine and kind than it is to be famous.
  3. Everyone has a reason for being the way that they are. Keep that in mind before you judge them.
  4. It does no good to be in a hurry if you’re travelling in the wrong direction.
  5. Quality services and products are worth waiting for.
  6. It’s possible to worry yourself sick (literally), so be careful what you think and what you wish for.
  7. When dreading a situation, it’s rarely as bad as you anticipate it will be.
  8. Problems tend to follow us even when we move. Relocating isn’t always the answer.
  9. Having a moment of weakness in front of your children doesn’t make you less of a hero in their eyes; it only makes you human.
  10. Those who claim to have all the answers never do; it’s often the quiet ones that have the most wisdom and the best things to say.
  11. It’s not worth staying at a seedy motel just to save a few bucks. Pay the extra money to sleep in a neighborhood where you can’t hear gunshots in the distance.
  12. When camping, arrive early enough to set up the tent before it gets dark.
  13. When looking for a good restaurant in another city, always ask the locals.
  14. In a pinch, a plastic straw can act as a toothpick at the movie theater.
  15. A genuine compliment can literally save a person’s life when they’re having a bad day.
  16. When you point out a person’s flaws, it labels you as ugly; not them.
  17. Time has the power to heal wounds. And so does music.
  18. Life can be as beautiful or as ugly as you want it to be.
  19. Blending in is safe. Standing out is brave. Be brave!
  20. The human race is far more resilient than we give ourselves credit for. Your spirit is damn near unbreakable. And your soul is entirely indestructible.
